Having been only a matter of minutes away from sealing a switch to Spanish giants Real Madrid, David de Gea has made a sensational U-turn by agreeing a new four-year contract with Manchester United, with an option for a further year, ending doubts surrounding his future, for now.

In the closing stages of the transfer deadline in Spain, United’s number one De Gea saw his long-mooted move to Real Madrid come desperately close to being agreed, only for it to calamitously fall through at the final hurdle.

Under demanding Dutch boss Louis van Gaal, the Spain international stopper had previously been outcast to the stands, during an intense summer of speculation linking him with a move to his home capital, but the 24-year-old is now looking forward to a new chapter at Old Trafford.

“I am delighted to be starting this new chapter in my United career. I have always enjoyed playing with these great players in front of our fantastic fans,” said De Gea, upon signing his new long-term deal.

“Manchester United is a special club and Old Trafford is an ideal place for me to continue to develop my career. I’m looking forward to putting a difficult summer behind me and concentrating on working hard to improve and help my teammates to be successful.”

The Spaniard joined the Premier League title hopefuls in 2011 and has gone on to make 175 appearances, helping secure the domestic crown in 2013 and storming to two successive player of the year awards with his spectacular heroics in goal.

His boss Van Gaal brought Argentina number one Sergio Romero in on a free transfer this summer, during the height of speculation regarding De Gea but, after starting all of his new club’s games so far, he may have to make way for the usual number one.

“I am absolutely delighted David has signed a new contract,” added Van Gaal. “He is one of the best goalkeepers in world football. I am very pleased that he will be part of the team for many years to come.

“David made a very important contribution to our performance last season and he has been the club’s Player of the Year for the last two seasons. He is a popular player who is keen to learn and enhance his game. At such a young age for a goalkeeper, he has many years ahead of him.”

United are 14/1 to lift the title this season, but will be heavily boosted by the news that their stalwart shot-stopper will be remaining with them for the foreseeable future, after a four-year deal was agreed.
