Redcar preview: Breslin and SDS a potent combination
Breslin looks to have plenty going for him in the 1m nursery at Redcar today (15.55) now dropped in class and partnered by Silvestre De Sousa for the first time.
The Mick Channon trained colt has only had four starts, and shaped with plenty of promise on debut at Ascot when a not knocked about sixth of 13 to Ray’s The Bar in a class 4 contest.
Breslin the didn’t seem to take to the Tapeta surface when sent off 7/4 favourite and finishing sixth at Wolverhampton, but bounced back to post a solid effort when staying on to finish a never nearer 5 3/4 length sixth of 13 in a decent 7f maiden at Newcastle.
The son of Atlantic Sopport then ran better than his final finishing position suggests on handicap debut at Windsor when sixth of nine to Cartago, keeping on nicely under tender handling without ever quite threatening to land a blow.
Cartago has since gone on to follow-up off a mark of 81, and the form looks strong in the context of this lower grade class 6 affair.
The assessor has also been kind in quickly dropping Breslin 3lb to a mark of 59, and the booking of SDS to partner him for the first time suggests connections mean business.
In the 5f handicap (15.20), Boris Gregoriev can take advantage of a drop in the weights to score an overdue success.
The Mick Easterby trained gelding is on a long losing run, having not scored since landing a class 5 contest on soft ground at Ayr back in September 2013 off a mark of 67 in the hands of Graham Gibbons.
Boris Gregoriev got put up to a mark of 73 for that success, but is now able to race off just 63.
That is 4lb lower than when last successful and gives the six-year-old major claims from a handicapping perspective on the pick of his form.
Although not at his best in his last two starts, the son of Excellent Art had previously run well when third at Hamilton and fourth at Carlisle and now has underfoot conditions to suit.
It also looks significant that Gibbons is now back in the saddle for the first time in 14 months given Boris Grigoriev’s shrewd connections, and everything points to a big run.
