Super League: Wigan travel to St Helens in the Super 8s

CORAL ENHANCED ACCAS

After going joint-top of Super League last time out following a 30-24 win over Hull FC, Wigan are odds-on at 5/6 with Coral to beat fierce rivals St Helens.

Warriors coach Shaun Wane though is determined that the team get something from the season, and is targeting the League Leaders Shield as a minimum priority. “Leeds are talking the talk about wanting to win all three trophies and that’s the challenge for my players to make sure we get something out of the season,” he said.

“It would put us in a good position for the play-offs, having a home semi-final as we’re unbeaten at home for a long time. It’s a really, really important we win this next game [against St Helens] and the Castleford game.”

Asked what finishing first would mean, Wane continued: “It’s massive, there’s also a financial gain for the club.”

Last time out, club top-scorer Joe Burgess crossed and he has also scored in both matches against St Helens this season, so his 8/1 odds to breach the in-goal area first are great value. On the other wing, Josh Charnley also took four points from the win over the Airlie Birds and has the same odds of Burgess to draw first blood.

The Saints made hard work of a 42-38 win over Castleford last time out, in what was a thrilling match. Adam Swift’s hat-trick was the main talking point and he is 8/1 to cross first. Mark Percival scored a brace during the win and is 11/10 to crash over again anytime.

St Helens coach Keiron Cunningham, meanwhile, was highly critical of the video referee system following the win over Castleford and will be looking for a more straightforward experience against Wigan.

“The system is getting under my skin,” he said. “It’s making a mockery out of rugby league –they make a call on the field and somehow it gets overturned. I don’t understand it and I’m not sure what we’re getting out of it.”
