Lingfield preview: Dark Profit can collect for Cowell
David Metcalf | October 20, 2015
The gelding had some smart form to his name last year when trained by Charlie Hills, including when 1 1/4 length third of 10 to the now 113-rated Mattmu in a 6f maiden at Haydock.
Dark Profit also ran well to on handicap debut when seventh of 14 to Felix Leiter in a hot class 2 nursery at York off a mark of 80, and is now able to race in this class 5 contest off just 71.
That is a career-low rating and gives Dark Profit major claims from a handicapping perspective. The three-year-old also comes into the contest having opened his account in facile fashion last time out over 5f at Chelmsford on his first start for trainer Robert Cowell.
Although Dark Profit didn’t beat much, the win will have done his confidence the world of good and the son of Dark Angel is the type that Cowell excels with.
In the 1m 2f handicap (17.10), Vale Of Iron is nicely treated on the pick of his form and can go well at a big price.
The John Best trained colt has yet to get his head in front in 16 starts, but has run some really solid races to make the frame on six occasions.
They include a 3/4 length second of 12 to Rocket Punch in a class 4 contest at Kempton off a mark of 67, where Vale Of Iron finished three lengths in front of the fifth home American Artist who has won three times since and is now rated 90.
That is strong form in relation to this lower grade class 5 contest, and Vale Of Iron is now able to race off 1lb lower.
It gives the three-year-old every chance at the weights, and if the refitting of the cheekpieces have the desired effect Vale Of Iron looks capable of running a huge race.
