Sedgefield preview: Court Of Law gets the verdict
Court Of Law showed a good attitude to open his account last time out and can make light of a rise in the weights to follow-up in the 2m 3f handicap chase on today’s card at Sedgefield (16.40).
The Donald McCain trained seven-year-old ran well to be placed on his first two starts over fences before making all to beat Badgers Retreat by a head at Worcester 20 days ago.
Court Of Law held on gamely at the line having been five lengths clear two from home, and the pair pulled 41 lengths clear of the third home.
The runner-up has also come out and won since, and that gives the form a solid look in the context of this contest.
Although now 6lb higher in the weights, Court Of Law’s revised mark of 99 looks workable given that he was rated as high as 110 over hurdles.
The seven-year-old also remains open to further improvement after just three starts over fences, and connections could not have found a weaker class 4 contest for the son of Court Cave.
Court Of Law also has the services of Wayne Hutchinson in the saddle, and another plus is that McCain has a strike rate of 29% with his runners at the venue in the last 12 months.
In the 2m 3f handicap hurdle (14.40), Hunters Belt can take advantage of a drop in the weights to gain a sixth success over the obstacles.
The George Bewley trained 11-year-old was last successful over 2m 5f at Kelso back in March when digging deep to score by 1/2 a length off a mark of 112.
Hunters Belt got put up to 116 for that success and has failed to trouble the judge in eight subsequent starts.
However, the gelding didn’t run too badly last time out after an 80 day break when weakening late on to finish fourth over 2m at Hexham and is now able to race in this off just 104.
That is 8lb lower than when last successful and lowest hurdles’ rating Hunters Belt has raced off in over three years.
It gives Hunters Belt major claims from a handicapping perspective, especially now refitted with the blinkers he wore when last victorious and stepped back up in trip.
