Ambitious Premier League side Bournemouth, 9/1 with Coral for a top 10 finish, have announced the signing of striker Benik Afobe from Wolverhampton Wanderers until 2020 for a club record deal – a reported £9m plus add-ons.

The signing comes not long after the club’s first January transfer window capture of Juan Iturbe until the end of the season, as the Cherries continue their aim to stay in the top flight despite numerous injury setbacks.

“I’m delighted,” Afobe said. “It’s been a long time coming and I am just very thankful the manager has given me this chance and opportunity to be at this Premier League club and I can’t wait to get going.

“I have done a lot for someone that’s only 22. I’ve had injuries, I’ve been out on loan to six different clubs, so I’ve played for a lot of different clubs in my young career so far.

“I’ve learned a lot definitely – good things and bad things – and I’m just going to take it all on board and keep improving while I’m here at Bournemouth.

Afobe only signed for Wolves almost exactly a year ago from Arsenal for around £2m, after six previous loan spells to various sides, and made an immediate impact by netting 13 times in 23 Championship matches.

Starlet Afobe in great scoring form

The former England youth attacker, now 22, has carried on that form to this campaign too, scoring 10 in both the league and Capital One Cup and he will now no doubt lead the Cherries’ line in the absence of long-term injury lay-off Callum Wilson.

Bournemouth are currently down in 16th, but have done remarkably well given their extremely unlucky injury record this term, which includes previous club record transfer Tyrone Mings (£8m).

They are four points above the drop zone, and are currently on a run in the league of losing just once in their last eight so can certainly now push on in their bid for survival.
