Shearer Says: “It’s very important that England’s next choice of manager is someone who understands English football”

| 02.07.2016

It’s very important that England’s next choice of manager is someone who understands English football, the English mentality and the players in this country.

We’ve gone for foreign managers before but neither Sven or Fabio Capello had worked in England before they took the job so they did not understand the English mentality. There’s no question they had great CVs and are good managers but they struggled to get the best out of our players.

I’m pleased that Glenn Hoddle’s name is being mentioned as an option to succeed Roy Hodgson. From experience, I’ve worked with Glenn before. I think he would be an excellent choice.

He’s a very good coach, he knows the game inside out and most importantly, he knows the English mentality. He was discarded far too early in his previous spell. I enjoyed playing under him and I am sure the current set of players would also enjoy working with him.

It looks like Gareth Southgate has ruled himself out of the running for the job. That doesn’t surprise me, especially if the reports are correct that the FA were looking to appoint him in an interim role. I totally understand why he would turn that down.

If they are not preapred to give it him full-time then he has every right to say no thanks. He’s been around the set-up as the under-21 manager so he knows how it works. That would have been the obvious option available to the FA.

I’ve seen Jurgen Klinsmann’s name mentioned a few times over the last couple of days. I know most people would prefer an English manager, however, you do have to look at the best option available to you.

There does not look to be a huge number of good candidates available so it would not surprise me if Klinsmann was in the running for the job. Klinsmann knows the English game and he has been an international manager so he ticks a lot of the right boxes for me.

Eddie Howe is another man who could find himself in contention. He’s very young but ‎he’s done very well at the start of his managerial career so I can see why people are looking at him as a potential future England manager.‎

Then you also have Steve Bruce who knows the English game inside out, played at the top for Manchester United and has done well at all the clubs he has managed.

Who do you think will be the next permanent England manager? Whoever is is, why not head over to Coral and back your selection?
