Battersea a big player in Ebor

The Ebor handicap is one of the big betting races of the flat season and Battersea looks terrific each-way value at at 16/1 with Coral in the ante post betting for this year’s renewal of the 1m 6f contest at York on Saturday, August 20th.

Trained by Roger Varian, the son of Galileo looked a very smart performer in the making when landing back-to-back successes in competitive class 2 contests at Ascot in the summer of 2014.

Battersea was then clearly amiss when beaten out of sight in his hat-trick bid at Newmarket and also failed to fire on his first two starts last season.

However, the five-year-old bounced back to round off the campaign with a solid second to the progressive Curbyourenthusiasm at Doncaster and has looked better than ever in three runs this year.

Solid efforts in Group contests

After landing a competitive handicap at Meydan back in February, Battersea ran a blinder in a Group 3 contest at the same venue when staying on in eye-catching fashion to finish a 4 1/2 length fourth of 14 to the now 113-rated Sheikhzayedroad.

It was a cracking effort given how the race panned out, and there was also lots to like about Battersea’s latest run at Newmarket when fourth to Big Orange in the Group 2 Princess of Wales’s Stakes following a 126 day break.

After being held-up well off the pace by Andrea Atzeni, Battersea kept on nicely to be nearest at the finish and beaten 6 1/2 lengths.

Handicap mark looks exploitable

The winner has since gone on to land the Goodwood Cup for a second time and the runner-up and third home, The Grey Gatsby and Exosphere, are very smart sorts rated 115 and 117 respectively.

In the circumstances it was a fine run by Battersea after such a lengthy lay-off and it makes a mark of 107 look exploitable now that the entire is pitched back into handicap company.

Varian also appears to have laid out Battersea for the race and five-year-old’s have a good record in the contest having won five of the last 10 runnings.
