The Anfield legend scored some incredible goals since he came into the Liverpool team as a teenager, and there will be many a Kop fan who will be sad to see an end to these stunning strikes. To refresh your memory here are 10 of the many that he struck over the years while donning red.
Meanwhile, see if your favourite goal made our list.
Goal v Olympiakos 2004
The goal that changed Liverpool’s season. It ensured that the Reds progressed to the next round of the Champions League in stunning circumstances, as the Merseysiders went on to win the competition inspired by their skipper.
Goal v AC Milan 2005 Champions League final
Gerrard’s header in Istanbul was the catalyst in helping Liverpool record a superb fightback as they clawed their way from a 3-0 deficit at half time, to eventually lift the European Cup via a shoot-out. He also won a penalty for the equaliser, which Xabi Alonso dispatched at the second attempt. We’ve put highlight footage of the whole match in so you can see Gerrard’s whole contribution.
Goal v West Ham 2006 FA Cup final
What a strike. They’re still talking about this in the FA Cup, with this long-range effort being undoubtedly one of Gerrard’s best goals in terms of technique.
Goal v Manchester United 2000/01
Can you believe this was 16 years ago? As a sprightly 20-year-old Gerrard burst onto the scene here and truly introduced himself in spectacular fashion with a stunning long-range strike against Liverpool’s bitter rivals.
Goal v Manchester City 2013
Even at the age of 32 he was still doing it. A fine long-range effort as Liverpool recorded a 2-2 draw over Man City. Controlling it first, he steered his shot past Joe Hart to tuck it into the corner on the half volley.
Goal v Middlesbrough 2008/09
Worthy of box office credentials, this could have been one of his best. At least 40 yards out, and on the half volley in front of the Kop. Don’t take our word for it, view the video!
Goal v Everton 2014
Demonstrating his close range, pinpoint accuracy from a free-kick, this goal against cross-city rivals Everton from earlier this season had just enough pace on the ball to beat goalkeeper Tim Howard.
Goal v Marseille 2008/09
A ridiculous strike which seemed to defy science. Liverpool struck on the counter-attack against the French outfit, and as Gerrard hit the ball he wasn’t even facing the goal. A must watch!
Goal v Newcastle 2007/08
Incredible shot from a dead ball. Jeered all match by home fans, he silenced St James’ Park with this long range effort as the Reds went on to record a 3-0 victory.
Goal v Arsenal 2007/08
Another free-kick, which almost ripped the net off its posts. Gerrard completely fooled the Arsenal wall, beating goalkeeper Manuel Almunia in the process.
