Alan Shearer’s Man Utd v Liverpool thoughts

Coral ambassador Alan Shearer sat down with our very own John Hill to exclusively share his thoughts on the upcoming Manchester United v Liverpool Sunday derby.

The Red Devils may be four spots below the second-placed Reds in the Premier League, but victory for the hosts at Old Trafford will put them just two points behind them.

You can listen to Shearer’s Man Utd v Liverpool thoughts in the video below, but we’ve also picked out the best quotes from his latest interviews…

“Mourinho has got his swagger back”

“It’s a huge game, Man Utd-Liverpool, for both sets of supporters, for the rest of the Premier League,” Shearer said.

“Man Utd are in red-hot form, been getting some fantastic results, and Liverpool – five points ahead of them – it’s a chance for them to go eight points [ahead]. But if United win, [they go] two points behind, [which is impressive] if you think [of] some of the criticism that [they’ve] had, certainly earlier on in the season.

“[Jose] Mourinho 100 per cent has got his swagger back, you can see there’s an arrogance about him – a good arrogance – that we’ve not seen for a while. He feels confident and his team is looking very confident as well.

“It’s always a fixture that the neutrals [are] looking forward to, because of the atmosphere also. Not a lot of love lost between the two football clubs. So it’s a game I’m really looking forward to.”

“There’s an expectancy now they will win”

Meanwhile, on Man Utd’s turnaround of fortunes this season, as they are currently on a run of nine straight wins in all competitions:

“It’s working, it’s not as free-flowing as a lot of the fans would like, but they seem a lot happier now,” Alan added.

“There’s harmony, there’s a confidence about the football club and there’s an expectancy now that once they go out onto the pitch they [will] win – which wasn’t the case at the beginning of the season.”

“Liverpool will have to improve otherwise they’ll take another beating”

Unlike the Red Devils, Liverpool’s form has slightly tailed off, most notably in their last three fixtures against Sunderland (in the Premier League), Plymouth Argyle (FA Cup) and Southampton (EFL Cup).

“They rested players against Plymouth, and it came back to bite them because it gave them an extra game in the replay,” Shearer said.

“They put out a much stronger team at Southampton, but it was an awful performance. [They] deserved to be beaten, should’ve been beaten 4 or 5 [nil] actually, they were lucky to get away with 1-0.

“Southampton were much the better side, so they’ll be looking to improve massively at Old Trafford on Sunday, and they’ll have to be otherwise they’ll take a beating like they did [in the EFL Cup].”
