Shearer Says: “I have been to some of the biggest sporting events in the world but nothing tops this”

Alan talks to us about his love of the US Masters and the Grand National

It was such a shame the par three tournament at Augusta was called off on Wednesday. I was set to carry the bag for Lee Westwood. I had my overalls on and was all kitted out and then half an hour before the tee-off time, it was called off.  It was a great experience being around the practice greens and range though. Westy was going to give me a couple of shots which would have been fantastic. Lee said he didn’t want to win it as no player has been successful and then gone on to win the Masters. By giving me a couple of shots, I would have made sure he did not win it!

What it does do though is give me a great excuse to go back again next year and do it all over again. I absolutely love being out here. I have been to some of the biggest sporting events in the world and nothing tops this. The golf course is immaculate. The behaviour and respect the players and crowd show is amazing. I am just very lucky to be able to come out here and share it with some of the players. I had breakfast this morning with the defending Masters champion Danny Willett. Lee and Danny are both relaxed and chilled heading into their tee off in the opening round. They have been hitting the ball well on the range so I think they are quietly confident.

Another great sporting event I am looking forward to this weekend is the Grand National. Like everyone else, my family would sit around the TV and watch the race growing up. There is a bunch of us here who will watch the race on Saturday before heading to the golf course. Seeing as I am over here, I will be backing Just A Par each-way. He runs in green too so I have to do that. I also like the chances of More of That for J.P McManus.
