Shearer Says: “Liverpool are not improving under Klopp”

| 22.09.2017

Premier League record scorer shares his thoughts

Liverpool are on a sticky run right now, but Jurgen Klopp is very good at personal PR, and he hasn’t had much criticism yet.

I said it at the weekend, indeed I’ve said it all season, Liverpool under Klopp are not improving, there’s very little difference between his side now and the Liverpool side under Brendan Rodgers.

They are great going forward but terrible at the back, and it makes you wonder, what is going on at the training ground, as we’re seeing the same mistakes from the same players, week in, week out?

This Liverpool side had aspirations of winning the Premier League at the start of the season, but the reality is they have no chance of winning the title, unless they rapidly improve their back line.

I know they tried to sign Virgil Van Dijk in the summer, but they were never going to get him, that was clear from the start.

They brought in Robertson at left-back, but that was never going to be enough, and they are no better defensively this season than last.

Same old problems

What will buy Klopp time is that they are in the Champions League again, but it’s not like he’s only been there a couple of months.

He’s had plenty of time and money to make this squad his own, but nothing’s improved and certainly defensively, at times they’re a shambles.

They went out of the League Cup this week, and it was the same old story, silly mistakes at the back, lots of possession but no goals.

When you look at Swansea playing Spurs at Wembley, working their socks off to get a point, and the same with Burnley at Liverpool, it proves that these teams do go on the training ground and work on their defensive play.

So it makes you think, what are Liverpool doing on the training ground?
