Big Match Breakdown: Swansea v Sheffield Wednesday

| 27.02.2018

Both sides have enjoyed a good cup run

They haven’t had much to cheer about in their respective leagues, but one of Swansea City or Sheffield Wednesday will bag an FA Cup quarter-final spot.

It’s something of a Carlos Carvalhal derby tonight, as he welcomes his former employers Wednesday to Wales.

Here’s all the key info you need for tonight’s replay…

Head to Head

Last Saturday’s 0-0 draw between the sides was the fourth draw in five meetings. Three of those have now ended goalless.

The Swans hammered Notts County 8-1 in a replay in round four, but Wednesday will be of sterner stuff.

The Premier League side have won their last five at home. The Owls are winless in six away from Hillsborough, failing to score four times.

Likely XIs

Both sides are suffering with a number of injuries. Swansea are without Wilfried Bony, Andre Ayew, Leroy Fer and Renato Sanches.

For Wednesday, Jordan Rhodes, Fernando Forestieri, Kieran Westwood and Barry Bannan are absent.

The Swans can still call upon the likes of Tammy Abraham, Nathan Dyer, Sam Clucas, Jordan Ayew and Martin Olsson.

George Boyd, Adam Reach and Lucas Joao will look to do the business tonight. Both Carvalhal and his Wednesday successor Jos Luhukay may also throw a few youngsters into the mix too if they want to focus on their league priorities.

Key Battles

Recent meetings have lacked goals, but neither side will want to see extra-time tonight.

So we should see an open game. Abraham hasn’t quite hit the heights expected, so this is another chance for the Swansea striker to make headlines.

Wednesday’s problem is that they just can’t score on their travels. They must find a way to break down a Swansea defence which has conceded only three goals at home from five games.

Match Odds

Premier League Swansea are the 3/4 favourites to win the match in 90 minutes. A Wednesday success is 21/5, with the draw and extra-time available at 12/5.

It’s 21/10 for a Swansea win and over 2.5 goals, with Abraham the most likely man to break the deadlock and score first at 10/3.
