Preview and odds of Champions League quarter final

Two Premier League giants come to blows on the European stage as the Tottenham Hotspur stadium hosts its inaugural Champions League tie against Manchester City.

This is the first instalment of a three-part series between the pair across eleven days which could define both club’s seasons.

It all kicks off at 8:00pm on BT Sport 2, but stick around as we have an in-depth preview and odds to whet the appetite.

Head-to-Head

Tottenham dominated this fixture in the mid-noughties, winning 12 and losing just one meeting between these sides between December 2004 and May 2010.

It’s been much more of an even affair since, but Man City arrive with three-straight wins over Spurs, including this season’s 1-0 win at Wembley.

Likely XIs

Man City vs Tottenham - Football tactics and formations

Tottenham: Lloris; Alderweireld, Sanchez, Vertonghen; Trippier, Sissoko, Eriksen, Rose; Alli, Kane, Son

Man City: Ederson; Mendy, Stones, Laporte, Walker; Fernandinho, De Bruyne, D. Silva; Sterling, B. Silva, Aguero

The home side will have to make do without the injured trio of Eric Dier, Erik Lamela and Serge Aurier for the first-leg.

Son Heung-Min and Lucas Moura are both pushing for starts and could support Harry Kane as the number nine.

Whether Mauricio Pochettino opts for a flat back-four or a three in defence in his first Champions League quarter-final as a manager could be telling.

City’s Benjamin Mendy could retain his spot at left-back after returning to the side for the FA Cup semi-final win over Brighton & Hove Albion.

Gabriel Jesus will feel hard done by to lose his place following his winning goal last weekend, but Sergio Aguero could be available again.

Key Battles

Who gets a handle of the midfield could go a long way to deciding the outcome of this tie.

If we see Moussa Sissoko cantering through the midfield, bustling his way past Fernandinho and David Silva – then Spurs could nick this one.

Christian Eriksen will be fighting for the director’s role with City architects Kevin de Bruyne and Bernardo Silva.

There have been several question marks over Hugo Lloris’ form this season and he’ll have to be at his best to keep out a lively Citizens attack including Raheem Sterling.

Match Odds

The outright odds have City at a short 5/6 to travel back to Manchester with the advantage.

Tottenham’s last victory over the Sky Blues came back in 2016 in a 2-0 victory. Poch’s men are 3/1 to grab the win tonight with a draw at 13/5.

Bernardo Silva is becoming increasingly influential in Guardiola’s team, with the Portuguese playmaker at 9/2 to score in an away win.

Spurs to win with both teams finding the net is 11/2.

Son is 2/1 to score anytime, while you can get Sterling at 9/2 to break the deadlock.
