Odds and preview for the Championship Play-off final

Aston Villa and Derby County head to Wembley today to fight for the last remaining spot in the Premier League next season, in what is dubbed the ‘richest football match’ in the world.

Frank Lampard’s side came from behind to beat Leeds United in their play-off semi-final in a thrilling match, with Dean Smith’s Aston Villa beating Midlands rivals West Brom on penalties.

It’s likely to be a tight affair at Wembley, with kick-off at 3pm live on Sky Sports Football, but ahead of the match, we’ve got all the odds and info right here…

Head-to-Head

In their two previous meetings this season, Villa have come out on top comprehensively, picking up a 3-0 win in November at Pride Park, followed by a 4-0 thumping at Villa Park in March.

The Villans also boast a better historical head-to-head record, winning 71 of their 140 meetings, compared to the Rams 44 wins.

Likely XIs

Aston Villa vs Derby County - Football tactics and formations

Aston Villa: Steer; Elmohamady, Tuanzebe, Mings, Taylor; Hourihane; Adomah, McGinn, Grealish, El Ghazi; Abraham.

Derby County: Roos; Bogle, Keogh, Tomori, Cole; Johnson, Holmes; Wilson, Mount, Lawrence; Marriott.

Villa are likely to be without James Chester and Orjan Nyland through long-term injuries. Axel Tuanzebe faces a late fitness test after limping off from their semi-final with West Brom.

Kortney Hause will step in for Tuanzebe should the Manchester United loanee not pass his fitness test.

Frank Lampard’s Derby County will be without Scott Malone after the left-back picked up a red card in the 91st minute of their 4-2 second-leg win over Leeds at Elland Road.

The Rams are likely to have Martyn Waghorn back in the squad, but he isn’t expected to regain his starting spot after the scintillating form of Jack Marriott in that win over Leeds.

Curtis Davies and Craig Forsyth are both long-term absentees, but Craig Bryson could be fit in time to make the bench after missing the semi-final with ankle ligament damage.

Key Battles

Tammy Abraham finished the league with 26 goals, with only Norwich City’s Teemu Pukki scoring more. Fikayo Tomori and Richard Keogh will need to restrict the supply to him in and around the box.

After Malone’s red card, Ashley Cole is Derby’s only option at left-back. The 38-year-old was once considered the world best left-back, but age is no longer on his side and he could endure a torrid time from Albert Adomah.

Frank Lampard should stick with Marriott after his two goals against Leeds, but with Waghorn back fit, they’ve got options up from. If Villa are without Tuanzebe, Hause will need to step into his boots and suffocate any space the Rams strikers have.

Jack Grealish has galvanised Villa since his return from injury, and his reintroduction to the team inspired their late season charge towards the play-offs. He’s the catalyst to any creativity from the Midlands side.

Match Odds

Aston Villa are favourites to win the match and gain promotion to the top flight of English football. They’re 6/5 to win the match in 90 minutes, and 8/13 to win promotion by any means.

Derby are outsiders, but they were the underdogs against Leeds too. They’re 23/10 to win in 90 mins at Wembley, or 5/4 to win promotion.

A Villa win in extra time comes in at 10/1 with a penalty shootout win at 11s. Derby are 12/1 to win in extra time, with a shootout win also at 11s.

Abraham is the favourite to open the scoring at the national stadium at 7/2 and you can find 6/4 on him scoring anytime. He’s 17/2 to bag at least a brace too.

Marriott and Waghorn are favourites to score first if Derby break the deadlock. They’re 11/2 for that, or you can get 9/4 on either scoring anytime.
