Ebor Festival Day Three Betting Tips: Brilliant Battaash to dominate the Nunthorpe Stakes?
Michael Johnson | 20 August 2020
Preview ahead of Friday’s racing from York
It’s the penultimate day of the Ebor festival, with more top-class racing to look forward to during the day.
Today’s seven races include the Nunthorpe Stakes, where some of the best sprinters around will be showcasing their speed across five furlongs – including the brilliant Battaash. Can he be stopped?
We’ve picked out the key runners and riders to keep an eye on in three of today’s biggest races.
13:45 Sky Bet Handicap
14:15 Lonsdale Cup Stakes (Group 2)
14:45 Gimcrack Stakes (Group 2)
15:15 Nunthorpe Stakes (Group 1)
15:45 EBF Convivial Maiden Stakes
16:20 EBF Fillies’ Handicap
16:50 Mile Stakes
A Group 2 win for Enbihaar at Goodwood earlier in the month may have set him up for success here, though he’s new to a 2-mile trip and may struggle with softer ground. That could tilt things in the favour of Dashing Willoughby, who is a proven stayer with recent victories at both Newmarket and Sandown.
Nayef Road is not to be underestimated after finishing second to Stradivarius in recent outings at both Goodwood and Ascot.
A winner with shedloads of promise after a strong outing at Salisbury, Minzaal is one to watch here, with Coral ambassador Jim Crowley aboard.
The biggest threats come from Mohawk King and Yazaman. Mohawk King finished above Miznaal at Ascot in a winning debut, while Yazaman looks ready to win, after two second-places in Group 2 outings at both Newmarket and Goodwood.
The latest superstar sprinter, Baattash looks difficult to beat here and is priced accordingly as the heavy favourite. It’s thought that perhaps the lack of crowds is even helping spur the temperamental speed-merchant to further success. Will it be back to back Nunthorpe wins?
Two horses that could mount a challenge are Art Power and A’Ali. The former has won in all three outings this year, with an impressive run at Naas last time out, though none were at Group 1 level. A’Ali has been similarly successful, with four Group 2 wins to his name – but can either match the pace and power of Battaash?
