Chelsea right to target Champions League most accurate shooter
Chelsea’s difficulty finding a striker that provides a regular source of goals is a much highlighted problem, but a swoop for the striker that has fired in more shots than any other player in the Champions League this season could help them turn a corner.
Fernando Torres, Samuel Eto’o and Demba Ba have managed just five league goals between them, despite Chelsea firing in 273 Premier League shots this season, which is remarkably only five less than Manchester City.
To put this into greater context, Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez has scored more Premier League goals this season than Chelsea’s three strikers combined.
Therefore, it would be no surprise to see Jose Mourinho dip into the transfer market for a new striker in January and new links with Hulk make a lot of sense.
For a team with their fair share of creative forces in midfield, a player with an eye for goal and not afraid to shoot when in a dangerous position could substantially boost their goal tally.
Hulk may be best known for starting on the right of a three-pronged attack for Brazil, but he has been pushed forward to lead the line at Zenit.
The result has been 23 shots on target in the Champions League and a further 16 that have ended up in the stand.
Reports suggest that Hulk is keen to leave Russia despite Zenit currently topping their domestic table, with one possibility being that a move to a bigger club would give him a greater chance of making the Brazil World Cup squad.
How much Hulk would cost is the big question, with Zenit sure to want to recoup much of the €40m outlay they spent when signing the 27-year-old from Porto.
Chelsea’s odds are 4/1 to win the Premier League this season and a lucrative-looking 5/4 to top the table if both of the Manchester clubs are not included.
