Newcastle Preview – Today’s the day for Bollinski

Today is the last ever day of flat racing on the turf at Newcastle and in the 2.50, Rock On Bollinski can break his duck and win this handicap off top weight.

Brian Ellison’s bay gelding has raced 13 times in his career but has only managed two placed finishes. His best performance to date was when stepped up to one mile seven furlongs last time out where he may have fared even better had he gained a clear run. He looks like a horse who appreciates a staying distance and given this is his longest test to date, he can break his maiden tag today.

The handicapper has been very generous leaving him on a mark of 60 today following his good effort last time out and given this is actually a step down in class, he can prove he is well handicapped and take victory. He was once rated 72 but has fallen 12lbs in the weights since October last year and he can make that count today.

He is top weight and does have to concede weight all around but this really is last chance saloon for Brian Ellison’s charge who should really be winning off this mark.

In the 2.20, a chance is taken on Malvia to get the better of the long odds-on shot Grand Beauty.

Michael Bell’s colt is a son of Exceed and Excel and although he’s hardly set the world alight in two starts, he could do better here on just his third start. He’s been given a 71 day-break since his last run and he should improve a lot for that seasonal debut.

It’s not a brilliant field and the favourite looks opposable. She has very solid form in the book but she appears to have flattered to deceive in a couple of her starts and she doesn’t look entirely straightforward. She’s at very prohibitive odds and Malvia looks much the better value.
