Preview and odds for this week’s European Tour event

Paul Casey finally makes his title defence of the Porsche European Open in Germany.

The Englishman won this event in 2019 by one shot ahead of Scot Robert MacIntyre, Germany’s Bernd Ritthammer and Austrian Matthias Schwab.

However, the 2020 edition of the tournament was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic and the knock-on effects on the global health crisis are still being felt as Germany’s quarantine restrictions means the event will now be held over three days, starting on Saturday June 5.

Casey is the 6/1 favourite to successfully retain his crown at Green Eagle Golf Courses, where an Englishman has won all three editions at the Winsen course.

Here we look at who could be in contention in the Porsche European Open betting tips.

Case for Paul to hit the ground running

Casey has been in superb form since the start of 2021 and he will want to continue that in Germany on Saturday.

The world number 21 won the Omega Dubai Desert Classic in January, a week after a top-10 finish in the United States, and has gone on to record three more top fives, including at the Players Championship and US PGA Championship.

Another positive for Casey is he leads the charts on strokes gained per round on the European Tour and sits second behind fellow Englishman Sam Horsfield in approach strokes gained.

Jordan Smith – at 40/1 – and Richard McEvoy – who is priced at 250/1 – won this event in 2017 and 2018 respectively and Horsfield will hope to follow the trend on English winners as he aims for his third European Tour victory at a price of 22/1.

Two-time major championship winner Martin Kaymer is edging closer to ending his seven-year winning drought as he hopes to build on his third-place finish in Austria in April and is 33/1 to prevail on home soil.

Bernd Wiesberger

Bernd toasts consistency as Wiesberger eyes another title

Bernd Wiesberger successfully defended his Made in HimmerLand title in style with a five-shot victory and will hope to continue his terrific winning form.

He has eight European Tour titles to his name and four of those have come since the start of the 2019 season, which is only matched by world number one Dustin Johnson.

Wiesberger is 14/1 for a ninth victory and he will be aided by his accuracy off the tee (ranked 34th) and is also 24th on the green in regulations list for this campaign.

Tapio Pulkkanen could use previous positive experiences at Green Eagle Golf Courses to gain an advantage in Germany.

The Finn, who finished third at the Canary Islands Championship and in the top 20 last week, won at this venue while playing in the Nordic Golf League in 2015 and could go close once again.

The big-hitting 31-year-old is 23rd in driving distance this season and is a 100/1 chance.
