Preview and odds for this week’s PGA Tour event

Jon Rahm will return to action at The Memorial Tournament where he will aim to successfully defend a title for the second time in his career worldwide.

The world number three finished in a tie for eighth at the US PGA Championship and the Spaniard will hope to continue that form in Ohio, where he won by three shots 11 months ago.

Rahm is the 10/1 favourite to taste victory for a second time at Muirfield Village Golf Club and he is the only player on the PGA Tour to have double figures of top-10 finishes this season.

Rahm, who retained his Open de Espana in 2019 after winning the previous year, aims to make Padraig Harrington’s European Ryder Cup team and will want strong performances for the rest of campaign.

Jordan Spieth, who has five top-five finishes and one victory in 2021, is joint-second favourite at 14/1 and is likely to feature prominently in plenty of The Memorial Tournament betting tips.

Roaring Rahm to surge into contention in Ohio

Rahm became a father for the first time in April and produced a tied for fifth at the Masters Tournament on his return the following week but that is just the start of another consistent season.

He is third on strokes gained: tee to green, sixth for greens in regulations percentage, 12th in the list of scoring average, 14th on birdie average per round and 19th on driving distance – showcasing his all-round game.

Spieth has recaptured some of his best form which saw him win three major championships and reach the summit of the Official World Golf Rankings in 2015 and 2016.

He is now at world number 23 after a slide to as low as 92nd at the start of the year but eight top-10 finishes have seen the 27-year-old start the ascent back up the rankings, thanks to his hot putting.

Spieth is 10th for birdie average and 21st for scoring average, which will be needed at Muirfield.

One person you cannot rule out over the long 7,392-yard, par 72 layout is Bryson DeChambeau.

The world number four tops the driving distance average at 322.5 yards and also sits at the summit of the FedEx Cup standings and should be in contention at 14/1.

Rickie Fowler

Rickie to roll back the years

Rickie Fowler has been a mainstay on the PGA Tour for 12 years, which has yielded nine titles and has made four appearances at the Ryder Cup.

That shows the level of consistency the American has had during his career but the 32-year-old is enduring his most difficult spell to date as he sits just outside the world’s top 100, despite an eighth-placed finish at Kiawah Island.

Fowler has come close on two occasions in Ohio, finishing second here in 2010 and 2017, and he is 50/1 to claim his first success at the venue.

Chile’s Joaquin Niemann extended the PGA Tour’s longest current streak of consecutive cuts made when he played his 20th straight weekend at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Niemann is eighth on tour for driving distance and finished in the top 30 in this event in 2019 so is an outside chance of 40/1 to win.
