Messi magic: 10 of his best goals on Barcelona debut anniversary

Lee Gormley | October 16, 2015

Lionel Messi is currently enduring an untimely spell on the sidelines through injury, with Barcelona battling on without their Argentine genius, but today marks a special occasion for the four-time Ballon d’Or winner, as he made his Catalans 11 years ago on this day.

After over a decade of mesmerising us with his incredible talents, here are 10 of the Argentina skipper’s best goals on the anniversary of his first ever appearance for Barcelona.

Athletic Bilbao 2015

We start with the most recent effort and the one that had the footballing world talking from the 2015 Copa del Rey final. Messi picked up the ball in a seemingly unharmful position on the right flank, but burst past the Bilbao defence to incredibly slot home and leave everyone speechless.

The admirable attacker will be vying for further silverware success in Europe with Barcelona, when he returns form injury, and his side are 10/3 favourites with Coral to lift their sixth Champions League accolade this year.

Bayern Munich 2015

Even a World Cup winning German defender was made to look a fool by the attacking talents of this Argentine genius earlier this year. Messi cruised past Jerome Boateng with an amazing dummy and neatly lifted the ball over apparently the world’s best goalkeeper Manuel Neuer with ease.

Almeria 2015

Messi makes this Spanish league goal look simple, as he received the ball wide right and continued into the Almeria penalty area, before unleashing this unstoppable whipped strike.

Iran 2014

Barcelona’s main man hasn’t been too bad for his country either! In last summer’s World Cup in Brazil, Messi produced a typically sublime moment of genius, seeing his curled effort find the top corner to secure a victory for Argentina in the dying seconds of their group match.

Arsenal 2012

In a European encounter, and yet another delicate chip from Messi, Arsenal were dismantled by the outstanding talents of this Nou Camp great, as he latched on to a perfect through ball to lob the goalkeeper with a trademark strike.

Real Madrid 2011

Messi has been a constant terror for El Clasico rivals Real Madrid and this dazzling solo goal just underlines the Argentine’s excellence, especially in the Champions League.

The Nou Camp star runs on to the ball from the centre circle but brushes past the entire Galatico side to eventually finish past a helpless Iker Casillas.

Arsenal 2011

In another Champions League clash against the Gunners, Messi majestically chips the ball up over an incoming Manuel Almunia to then rocket it into the net for Barcelona.

Real Zaragoza 2010

In a La Liga clash with Zaragoza, Messi showed great strength to hold off a crushing collision, then proceeds to completely terrorise the defence before firing into the bottom corner.

Manchester United 2009

On the grandest club stage of them all, Messi leaps highest to header home the defining goal which helped clinch the Champions League crown ahead of Sir Alex Ferguson’s Red Devils. Possibly the smallest man on the pitch, but he showed that he can literally score any type of goal!

Getafe 2007

As a 19-year-old, Messi was scarily nowhere near the peak of his powers, but was still able to produce this superb moment of genius.

In what was almost a carbon copy of Diego Maradona’s famous solo World Cup goal, the clinical Catalan attacker sailed through Getafe’s defence before dispatching with his ‘weaker’ foot.
